If you experience a severe toothache, this could be a sign of a dental emergency. If you notice persistent throbbing, sharp, or even dull pain, it’s time to call our office. Having an intense toothache could be a sign of a condition that needs treatment right away. For example, an advanced cavity or a dental abscess will need to be treated before your condition worsens and puts the entire tooth at risk. Here at True Dental, we can treat your pain quickly and help you find relief. In the meantime, there are a few simple steps you can take to ease your discomfort.

  1. Apply a Cold Compress
  2. Gently applying a cold wrap or compress to the affected cheek may help to reduce swelling and ease pain. Try using a soft ice pack and wrapping it in a towel. Sit up or reclined in a chair. Place the compress on your cheek for no longer than 20 minutes at one time. Wait 20 minutes before applying another cold compress. Even if swelling reduces with cold therapy, please come in to see us. Facial swelling may be a sign of a dental abscess that requires emergency treatment.

  3. Take Over-The-Counter Medication
  4. Consider taking a pain medication that you can buy at your local drugstore, like ibuprofen, as a defense against pain while waiting to see us. Be sure to follow the bottle’s instructions for taking the medication. Do not borrow or use a friend’s prescription medication.

  5. Saltwater Rinse
  6. One of the best things you can do to clean the area and ease your discomfort before seeing us is to rinse gently with saltwater. Combine 8 ounces of water with 1 teaspoon of table salt. Gently gargle and swish the water around your entire mouth and then spit it out. You can repeat this several times.
