Signs of Oral Cancer

It’s important to know what signs of oral cancer look like. While these are not always telling, you should schedule an appointment as soon as possible if you’re experiencing any of the following:

  • A sore that won’t heal
  • Swelling in your neck, jaw, or cheek
  • Abnormal pain in your mouth
  • Areas of numbness
  • White or red patches

Screening Process

During your visit, our team will perform both a visual and physical examination of your tongue, cheeks, and gums. We will feel for any abnormal lumps and areas of inflammation. If areas of concern are detected, we will either send you for further testing or ask that you make more frequent visits to our office so we can monitor the area.

Oral Cancer Prevention

There are a number of ways to prevent oral cancer. Using tobacco in any form puts you at high risk. If this applies to you, quitting is essential for your health. Heavy alcohol consumption also increases your risk of oral cancer. Reduce your intake as much as possible. When you are exposed to the sun, ensure you’re using sunscreen and a lip balm that contains at least 30 SPF.
