Sedation Dentistry in Odenton, MD
If you experience anxiety when considering dental treatment, you are not alone. Many people avoid dental care due to anxiety, jeopardizing their oral health and their smile. Our team at True Dental understands that dental care can be stressful for some of our patients. We strive to make our patients feel relaxed and comfortable when they come in for their visits, including offering sedation dentistry when appropriate.
Dental anxiety cannot always be calmed with reassuring words or a friendly chairside manner. Whether you have had bad experiences in the past at a dentist office or just feel uncomfortable with the intimacy of dental procedures, we respect the anxiety you feel. Sedation methods offer a solution to allow you to get the dental treatments you need for your health while addressing your anxiety. You can relax and feel at ease with a little help from a safe medication while our team cares for your smile.
Contact UsNitrous Oxide “Laughing Gas”
For mild to moderate dental anxiety, or to help relax those undergoing long or invasive treatments, nitrous oxide is offered at our office. Also referred to as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide offers a mild sedative for those undergoing dental procedures. This gas is breathed in through a mask, putting you into a relaxed, euphoric state. You are completely conscious and aware, but you will feel at ease. Nitrous oxide is safe – it can even be used for children who are restless in the dental chair. The effects quickly dissipate once you take a couple breaths of fresh air after your treatment is finished. You can even drive home afterward, without any lingering sedation effects.
At True Dental, we want all our patients to feel comfortable when coming to us for dental care. Contact our office today for an appointment and ask about our sedation options, including nitrous oxide, to improve your dental experience.
Who is not a candidate for nitrous oxide?
While nitrous oxide is safe for most patients, some may not be ideal candidates. Those with respiratory conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or severe asthma may have difficulty breathing in the gas. Pregnant women, individuals with certain neurological disorders, or those with a history of substance abuse may also be advised against it. Our team will review your medical history and current health status to ensure that nitrous oxide will be a safe and effective sedation method for you.
What does nitrous oxide feel like?
Laughing gas does not always make patients laugh, but it does typically create a sense of relaxation and calm. Patients often describe feeling light, tingly, warm, or slightly euphoric. Some may experience a floating sensation or mild drowsiness, but they remain fully awake and aware. The effects begin within minutes and wear off quickly after the gas is stopped. Most patients feel completely normal shortly after their appointment, making nitrous oxide a convenient sedation option for reducing dental anxiety.
Are there any side effects from nitrous oxide?
Patients who utilize nitrous oxide may experience mild, temporary side effects. These can include dizziness, nausea, headaches, or slight confusion, which typically subside quickly once the gas is stopped. In rare cases, overuse or improper administration may lead to more pronounced dizziness or fatigue. To minimize the risk of side effects, our team carefully monitors dosage and ensures patients breathe oxygen for a few minutes after the procedure to flush out any remaining gas.
