Dental Sealants in Odenton, MD

Do you ever wish your teeth could have invisible shields that would protect them from harmful bacteria and tooth decay? Dental sealants are essentially ultra-thin seals that are applied over the top of molars to help prevent decay from occurring in the grooves of the teeth that are hard for patients to clean thoroughly with a toothbrush. What are the benefits of dental sealants?

Dental sealants offer a number of benefits to patients, including:

  • Invisible on the teeth
  • Quick and comfortable application
  • No food restrictions
  • Cost-effective
  • Can last 7-10 years

How are dental sealants applied?

Dental sealants are most commonly applied right after a routine cleaning, as this is when the teeth are squeaky clean and plaque-free. After the teeth are dried, an acid solution is applied to help the sealant bond with the teeth. The teeth are then rinsed and dried again before the sealants are painted on, where they will bond with the tooth and harden. A curing light may be used during the application to speed up the process. Our patients often find that getting dental sealants placed is a quick, easy, and comfortable process!

Who should receive dental sealants?

Dental sealants are often recommended for children, as they can protect their permanent molars as soon as they grow in (around age six) and help them remain cavity-free. The second set of molars grow in around age 12, at which time a second set of sealants can be placed on these teeth. Sealants can last up to ten years before they need to be removed and replaced, and patients of all ages can have dental sealants placed on their natural teeth to decrease their chances of developing tooth decay.
