What Is the Difference Between Traditional Veneers and Lumineers?

Both traditional veneers and Lumineers are thin shells bonded to the front of your teeth. The main differences are their thickness and how much the tooth needs to be prepared. Traditional porcelain veneers are typically about 0.5 mm thick. To make room for them, a layer of enamel is removed from each tooth. Because enamel doesn’t grow back, this step is irreversible, and a local anesthetic is usually needed.

Lumineers are made from a durable, patented porcelain and are about 0.2 mm thick, close to the thickness of a contact lens. In most cases, they can be placed with little or no tooth reduction. That means many patients skip the anesthetic and the temporary veneers that often come with traditional treatment.

Are Lumineers Permanent?

Lumineers are a long-term cosmetic treatment, but they don’t have to be permanent. Because they usually require little to no enamel removal, Lumineers are often considered reversible. When your natural tooth structure has been preserved, they can typically be removed in the future with minimal impact on the teeth underneath. During your consultation, we’ll explain what to expect for your specific smile.

How Long Do Lumineers Last?

With proper care, Lumineers can last 20 years or longer! To keep yours looking their best:

  • Brush twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste and floss daily
  • Visit True Dental for routine checkups and cleanings
  • Avoid biting hard objects like ice, pens, or fingernails
  • Ask us about a night guard if you grind or clench your teeth

Am I a Candidate for Lumineers?

Lumineers may be a great fit if you’d like to improve:

  • Stained or discolored teeth that don’t respond to whitening
  • Chipped, worn, or slightly misshapen teeth
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Mildly crooked or uneven teeth

The best candidates have healthy teeth and gums and good oral hygiene habits. If you have tooth decay, gum disease, or significant bite problems, we’ll treat those first or recommend an option better suited to your needs. The best way to find out is a consultation, where we’ll examine your smile, talk through your goals, and show you what Lumineers can do for you.
