Tooth pain can be unbearable. Furthermore, you often can’t really see it or do much yourself at home to stop it. So, what is causing that tooth pain and why does it need to be treated by a dental professional? Here are four common conditions that result in tooth pain and their corresponding treatments.
- Tooth Decay
- Abscessed Tooth
- Tooth Damage
- Wisdom Teeth
Tooth decay due to bacterial plaque is one of the most common reasons for a toothache. When bacteria feast, they create acids that slowly eat through your teeth’s protective enamel. If the decay reaches the middle dentin layer, where your inner pulp’s nerve endings connect to tiny dentin tubules, it will begin to hurt. In most cases, you will need a filling or a dental crown. In more severe cases, where the decay has actually reached the bundle of soft tissue in the inner pulp, you will need root canal therapy to clean out the decayed pulp and preserve your natural tooth.
An abscessed tooth can be very dangerous because it’s infected. If left untreated, the infection can cause bone loss in your jaw and even spread to other parts of your body, making it more difficult to treat. If you have an abscessed tooth, you may experience pain, swelling, gum redness, a bad taste, fever, and/or swollen lymph nodes. It’s important to call us immediately to alleviate the pain and remove the infection before it spreads and causes even more severe systemic problems!
A blow to the mouth or biting down wrong on something hard can cause some serious pain. However, even if a cracked or broken tooth doesn’t hurt, it’s critical to still get it fixed so bacteria can’t sneak inside the cracks and breaks. Bacterial invasions inevitably lead to damage of your tooth’s inner nerves and blood vessels, which can cause a great deal of discomfort. Fortunately, gentle root canal therapy can save your natural tooth and prevent the need for a tooth extraction.
These days, there’s not much room in the average adult’s mouth for wisdom teeth so they often have trouble growing in and breaking through the gums properly. Eventually, the wisdom teeth can become impacted (trapped in the gums), infected, and even dangerous to neighboring tooth roots. You may experience pain, swelling, and shifting of your teeth. This usually requires the removal of the wisdom teeth.
